GAMESTOP BEGINS TAKING PREORDERS ON HALO 3 LEGENDARY EDITION

If you've been following the Halo 3 news out there, odds are you've heard rumors about the Halo 3: Legendary Edition boxed set. Wait... you haven't heard about it? What do you mean I should have told you about it? Sheesh, some people. Anyway, here's the deal - rumors have been floating around that unlike most "A-List" titles, Halo 3 won't just be coming in a regular and collector's edition, but Microsoft has decided that players who really love Halo 3 should have the option of taking it one step further - and such, are making the "Legendary Edition" available. Adding some credence to that rumor is the fact that Gamestop is now taking preorders for it.

While nothing seems concrete about the Legendary Edition, here's what we know so far;

  • Gamestop is taking preorders on it - $25 down, estimated final price of $99.99.
  • It includes.... wait for it.... A mini replica of the Master Chief's helmet. (Halo Spartan Mjolnir Mark VI Helmet Replica)
  • It will include the game and 3 bonus discs of content.
    • Bonus content
      • Behind-the-scenes at Bungie Studios with new insights into the Halo Universe and the making of Halo 3.
      • A special hi-res collection of all cinematics from Halo 1 and Halo 2 with director commentary from the Bungie Team bonus
      • Community content from Red vs. Blue and This Spartan Life.
  • Exclusive Gamer pictures and themes.
  • Did I mention the thing comes with a fricken helmet?
  • Each unit will have it's own unique serial number.
  • Did anyone even read anything else after I mentioned it comes with a helmet?

Now then, here are some things to keep in mind.

  1. The price isn't official yet, and I'm thinking that $99.99 is sounding kind of low - unless that helmet looks like crap.
  2. It comes with a helmet.
  3. You really don't need to know anything more than 1 and 2, do you?

So there you have it, get out to Gamestop or hit their website here and put your twenty-five bones down on it now, because I get the feeling it's going to see a pretty limited run - I know I'll be down there tomorrow reserving my Halo 3 helm....err game.

"Wii’s launch library contains games of all genres, and each one gives gamers a new way to play. While Wii Sports, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and EXCITE TRUCK will be ready to go on launch day, last-minute polishing by third parties means their exact dates will soon be locked down, though most will launch by the end of November. A complete list of launch-day titles will be announced in the near future. Visit www.Wii.com for updates. RIDGE RACER 7 TO USE 5 GIGABYTES OF HARD DRIVE SPACE?

A report over at IGN (by way of Kotaku) is stating that Namco's Ridge Racer 7 for the PlayStation 3 will make use of 5gig of hard drive space in order to speed up loading time. Now I'm all for faster load times, but when you consider the fact that the $499 PlayStation 3 only has a 20 gig hard drive, you can clearly see how things could get crowded fast if this becomes a standard for PlayStation 3 titles. I've got to hope that the use of the hard drive space will be optional and that we're not talking about PSP type load times if you choose to run off the disc.

For more details, check out the IGN article at this link and the Kotaku post at this link. Riiiiiiidge Racer!

SAM & MAX: SEASON ONE NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

By the time you read this, the first episode of Telltale's Sam & Max: Season One should be available for purchase. Now, I know I've ranted at length about my distaste for the voice acting of Max in the game, and I know there have been numerous times I've gotten a bad feeling about the direction of the game - but when I stopped and really thought about it, I came to one conclusion - namely that after all my bitching about how LucasArts has abandoned the graphic adventure genre and how I feel Sam & Max: Freelance Police would have been a commercial success, it would have been hypocritical of me to not pick up this game.

The fact that Telltale has wisely offered a preorder discount when you purchase all six episodes at once along with the bonus option of getting season one on disc for the cost of shipping (if you preorder all six episodes) when the first season wraps up certainly didn't hurt either. So long as I can manage to stay awake for an evening, something that seems to be getting harder and harder of late, I should have some first impressions of the game in thursdays news.

LAZY DAY TRAILERS: GEARS OF WAR MULTIPLAYER FOOTAGE

It started as just another ordinary day - a monday no less... then HCB over at the Gamer's Lounge forums posted links to some new Gears of War multiplayer footage and all hell broke loose. I'll admit to being a bit over-enthusiastic when it comes to this game, but truth be told, up until now I really didn't even give the multiplayer component of the game much thought. That's all changed now that I've seen the light... the light emanating from a weapon that allows you to target orbital lasers on an enemy. One last thing to note before we get to the videos - in video #2, we finally get a good look at a curb stomp. Sweeeet.

UPDATE: 3:23am - You may need to pause the video after verifying your age or enter your age information in all three video boxes before the videos will dsiaply properly.

For those of you who need the links for the above videos, here they are - both in standard resolution (as shown) and high-definition - don't ever say I didn't give you anything;

UPDATE: 11/04/06 - 2:41pm - Ignore the above links as Gametrailers keeps moving the location of the files for some insane reason. I've replaced the videos with YouTubed versions of the movies, so check those out instead.

 As there's still no video support here in the archives, use the above links to check out the videos.

DL'06 - MADDEN NFL'07 & ELEBITS ON THE NINTENDO WII

The way I see it, the Nintendo Wii versions of Madden NFL '07 and Elebits are really the only games left that I haven't talked about that should be of huge interest to anyone that aren't on the market as of yet, so I'll wrap up my oft-delayed coverage of Digital Life '06 with my impressions of both titles. Before I get to talking about the games themselves, I feel that I need to talk about the Wii and it's set up at the show.

In attending Digital Life, one of the things I hoped to do was to see if many of the reservations I had about the Wii were valid, or if I was just being my usual overly pessimistic self. Let's take a look at exactly what those concerns are;

  1. I worry that the system is not designed to be used in the real world. By this I mean that while everything seems to work well when Nintendo can set up the test environment just right, but how well will the system work when confronted with the infinite variations of gamers homes - what happens when everything is not optimal?
  2. With the controller essentially being 2 separate pieces, how would the controller feel and work when there wasn't something centering and steadying the controls? On any other system, you hold the controller in both hands and the center of the controller essentially stabilizes it in your hands. What happens when you take that away?
  3. With all the talk about how the system handles in sunlight, how would the pointer perform? Would it be easy to use at any range?
  4. With the odd shape of the Wiimote, will some games just feel "wrong" when played with it.
  5. While the Wii controls may work wonderfully for games that were designed with them in mind, how will games that are ports of existing console games hold up?

Now that we've gotten that aside, let me say this - my experiences with the Wii at Digital Life did not get rid of any of those fears - and in the case of the pointer, served to only make my fears worse. Simply put, in both Madden and Elebits, the pointer simply did not work. I don't know if it was the way the floor was set up, the fact that there were quite a few units in close proximity to one another or a calibration problem, but you simply could not get the pointer to remain still or point where you wanted it to half of the time - and by remain still, I don't just mean minor shaking - the thing was bouncing all over the screen.

It's this very problem that made Elebits completely unplayable on the day I attended the show. The game requires you to point the controller at objects on screen, and when even something as simple as that becomes overly frustrating, it's just not worth it. On thursday, there were two Elebits stations, and they were empty just about every time I walked by. The only thing I can say that's positive about the game was that in talking with a few people who attended the last day of the show, I was told that there were huge lined to try Elebits, so obviously the problem must have been fixed in some form.

Madden didn't make as much use of the pointer, so I was able to actually give the game a pretty solid run through. The first thing that strikes you about the Wii version of Madden NFL'07 is the fact that it basically looks exactly like the "current-gen" football games, but without many of the bells and whistles we've come to expect from the series - more than one person commented that there really wasn't much next-gen about the experience other than the control scheme. This is where the problem came in.

If the entire idea behind the Wii is to make games more accessible and simple to pick up, then Madden '07 is a prime example of a developer not "getting it" - the controls not only feel awkward, but actually require more coordination and special attention than other versions of the game, and the shape of the Wiimote certainly doesn't help the matter any. Simply put, you spend more time fighting the control scheme than you do actually paying attention to what's happening on the screen. While the gameplay mechanics may become second nature as time goes on, I get the feeling most gamers will just decide to stick with a different version of the game. In short, It felt as if Electronic Arts took the Gamecube version of Madden and tried to add some Wii specific features to it - something that will probably be commonplace at least early in the Wii's lifespan.

It really is a shame that Nintendo chose to not make an appearance at the show as the third party publishers really didn't do much to give attendees a positive first experience with the Wii - if anything, they made it feel more like the gimmick many of the systems critics make it out to be.

GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS II UPDATED TO VERSION 1.4

It's been awhile since we checked in with the good folks over at Stardock, so it should come as no surprise that Galactic Civilizations II has seen a few updates since out last visit. Version 1.4 was released 3 days ago, and based on the release notes, it seems Stardock is still working hard at making the game the best it can be. Here's the list of the most recent changes;

  • + Initial Colony buildings have less maintenance.
  • + New colonies start out with a population cap of 6 instead of 5.
  • + Farms provide less food.
  • + Each citizen provides more tax income than previous.
  • + Morale buildings have been increased in benefit but techs to get to them cost substantially more (ex: Virtual Reality Center now provides a 40% morale improvement vs. 25% in 1.31).
  • + Stock market no longer gives morale bonus (wasn't supposed to in the first place)
  • + Updated beam weapon model along with large hull models
  • + Updated some of the planetary improvement icons to be prettier
  • + Updated Achille's heel, Apocalypse, and Pathfinder missions in the campaign based on player feedback.
  • + Tweaks to make money not too hard to get early on but not as easy to get ridiculous levels of money later on (though expert players will still be able to do this).
  • + fixed bug where ships on auto-attack would try to attack ships they weren't at war with if the ship was in the way
  • + fixed bug with auto attack where it was using the wrong function to check to see if a ship was hidden by the FOW.
  • + fixed cheat key to force an AI player to surrender
  • + added in code so that when using the CTRL+Z cheat to run the game in AI test mode, it will make the AI take over for the human player
  • + fixed bug where ships that were being upgraded but were not selected tried to update the ShipContextWnd, resulting in a crash if the last ship to be selected was deleted
  • + fixed a bug where a ship (under certain conditions) could fail to start moving even if it had a path calculated to its destination
  • + added additional debug info for missing string in tradewnd, took precautions to avoid a crash
  • + Tweaks to the AI code that handles planetary improvement so that they don't do stupid stuff by mistake
  • + Fixed integer divide by zero crash (very rare but possible)
  • + Fixed bug where if you upgrade a constructor and build a starbase while it is upgrading, the starbase will change into a ship when the upgrade is complete
  • +  If RAW file fails to load, a height field is generated randomly
  • + Fixed crash in Quick Project Window (very rare case)
  • + fixed a bug that could occur if you loaded a campaign save game and tried to continue after finishing that mission, instead of using the campaign screen.
  • + added option to save ship design to disk.  If turned off, the ship design will not be saved to disk and will not show up the next time you start GalCiv2.  Ship designs will still remain in memory until the data is reloaded (from a save game, from starting a metaverse game after having played a normal game, etc).
  • + Some minor memory leaks fixed.

Galactic Civilizations II owners can obtain the v1.04 update via Stardock Central as usual. Don't you wish every company was as customer friendly as Stardock?
