X'06 KICKS OFF IN BARCELONA

BRINGING IT HOME: DAY 7 UPDATES

Day 7 of the Bringing it Home promotion comes to a close, and it was another decent day for North American Xbox 360 owners. The two highlights of today's content additions were the Xbox 360 demo of Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, as well as an updated trailer for The Darkness. I've got to say that while the trailer for The Darkness seemed to be all CGI, it did intrigue me enough to put the game back on my radar... not high on it, but back on there none the less. As for the Lego Star Wars II demo, it's the same exact demo that's been pushed out for most other systems already (Mos Eisley Spaceport) and the only thing I gained in playing it is that there's no need to spend extra money on it for the 360 version.

Here's the run down on day 7 as per Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb;

"The following content is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Trailers:
Forza 2 Physics & Damage
NBA 2K7
Sonic The Hedgehog
Shrek 3
Just Cause
NHL 2K7
The Darkness

Demos:
Lego Star Wars II"

MAME V.109 RELEASED

The latest version of the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator is now available. The main change in Version 1.09 is in the way artwork files are handled - you now have the option to load them on demand, rather than loading them all at once at start-up.

The updated files can be found at the official MAME page at Mamedev.org. You can Click here to see the full list of what's new in this update.

THE MADDEN CURSE STRIKES AGAIN

You know, you'd think by now that NFL players would run for the hills when they see the folks from Electronic Arts coming to offer the cover slot of a given year's copy of Madden NFL. Over the years, bad things have happened to players who took the coveted cover slot, and it looks like Madden NFL'07 has claimed it's victim.

Yup, Seattle's Shaun Alexander is now out "indefinitely" with a broken foot. You know, here's an idea for Madden NFL '08's franchise mode - have the ability to write into a players contract that he won't appear on a Madden box.

For those who are interested in the history of the Madden curse, here's a link to the Madden series' Wikipedia entry, including the history of the curse - check it out!

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - WHAT THE HELL?

Okay, this may be a little off-topic, but I've got to mention it... am I the only one who has noticed that ESPN has been using a soundbite from Sonic the Hedgehog in their Monday Night Football broadcasts?

For those who have no clue what I'm talking about, before they cut away to a commercial or often when they show players stats they play the noise you'd hear when you would have Sonic stand in place, rev up his spin attack and then let it go. It not only doesn't fit in with ANYTHING that they're doing on screen, but as a game addict, it snags my attention away from whatever I'm doing every time I hear it.

BRINGING IT HOME: DAY 6 UPDATES

As predicted, with the Tokyo Game Show now over, the North American market gets to see some goodies of it's own. Today's highlights include a demo of Sierra's F.E.A.R. and a few free picture packs.

I had a chance to try the F.E.A.R. demo, and while it seems a bit laggy at some points, and the aiming system feels a little too sensitive for a gamepad, it is essentially the same title as the PC game. There are some nice "jump out of your seat" moments, and it looks to be building up towards a solid gaming experience for those who never played the PC original - in other words, it's worth the 542.76mb of drive space it takes up.

Here's what else was new on day 6 as per Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb;

"The following content is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Trailers:
Battlestations Midway
Eragon
Import Tuner Challenge
Need for Speed Carbon
The Darkness

Demos:
FEAR

Picture Packs:
Mass Effect Picture Pack $ (Premium)
Battlestar Galactica  (US Only)

Videos:
TGS Showfloor video 3

Edit: The Mass Effect Picture pack is free. My error.

THIS WEEK'S RELEASES: SEPTEMBER 25TH - OCTOBER 1ST

I know I mentioned it last week, but I've got to say it again - the sheer amount of "throw-away" PC titles released every week really is staggering. Until you actually sit down and have to type it all out, you never quite realize just how much crap is being dumped on the market every week. Seriously, look at this week's PC titles and ask yourself if ANY of those titles are going to be worth picking up for the average gamer. Sure there's the CD-ROM version of Company of Heroes, but beyond that, it's pretty damn grim. I don't know about you, but if I was a game store, you could bet your bottom dollar that i wouldn't even bother stocking 80% of that crap either.

On the other hand, console and handheld gamers don't have much to cheer about this week either. Nintendo DS owners get Mario vs Donkey Kong 2, everyone gets a NBA game of some kind, and beyond that, it's really a guessing game. I tried the Xbox 360 Just Cause demo that went up on Xbox Live a little while back, and while some people seemed to like the demo, it just wasn't my thing. By the same token, there's a new Dance Dance Revolution game for those folks who are into that sort of thing. Rather than go on and on about a stack of games I really couldn't give a rat's ass about, I'll just leave you with the list and let you decide what on it might tickle your fancy this week... personally, I'd say beyond Mario vs Donkey Kong 2, you should pick up a used game or just save your money for another week;
