LAZY DAY TRAILERS: LOST PLANET: EXTREME CONDITION

It's been awhile since we last checked in on Capcom's highly anticipated Xbox 360 title, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, and since Capcom was kind enough to premiere a new trailer at the Tokyo Game Show, we figured we'd take a moment to stop and enjoy the show.

Once you've finished checking out the trailer, why not head over to the newly opened Lost Planet: Extreme Condition website for more details on what you can expect come January.

Still no love for video files in the archives, so here's the link for the video.

BRINGING IT HOME: DAY 4 UPDATES

The Xbox 360 Bringing it Home promotion continues, as does the drought of anything worthwhile to the North American market. Here's day 4's information as posted by Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb;

MAME32 .108.5 RELEASED

It looks like the changes in MAME 108u5 did indeed fix the problems the MAME32 team was having with the port, as MAME32 .108.5 has now been released to the general public. This version should incorporate all the changes in both MAME 108u4 and u5, both of which were relatively large changes, so you may want to hold off on upgrading until the next full release just to be on the safe side..

Check out the official MAME32 page here for more details and the download links.

BRINGING IT HOME: DAY 3 UPDATES

The Bringing it Home promotion continues, and day 3 brought us the first demo of the promotion, Fuzion Frenzy 2, which weighs in at a light 236mb. Beyond that, it's once again mainly content for the Japanese market, so there's still not much else to report. Here's day 3's information as posted by Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb;

"The following content is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Items with a * are Japan only.

MAME32 UPDATE

Just a quick update for those wondering where the MAME32 ports of the "U" updates are - The MAME32 team is having a bit of difficulty with some of the changes made in the last 2 update versions of MAME, and as a result, they're still working on updating MAME32. According to a note on the official MAME32 forums, they think .108u5 may have corrected some of the issues they were having porting MAME over to Windows, but suggest users stick with .108 or .108u3 for now.

MAME V.108U5 RELEASED

The fifth interim update to MAME v.108 is now available. This time around, there have been some serious changes and updates to the emulator, including Atari vector graphic adjustments and changes in how .png image files are handled. some changes have been made to the core of the emulator, and the dev team's comments lead me to believe that there may be a few issues with the release. As there are really no huge changes as far as features go, I'd probably suggest waiting until the next full version release before upgrading.

The updated files can be found at the official MAME page at Mamedev.org. You can Click here to see what's new in this update.

SONY OPENS TGS WITH KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Sony kicked off the Tokyo Game Show yesterday evening with a serious bang as they dropped 2 bombshells. First off, they have formally announced a price drop for the low end Playstation 3 from 59,800 yen ($515) to 49,980 yen ($429) model in Japan (and Japan only according to Sony). If that wasn't enough, Sony then announced that they've reconsidered their decision to not include an HDMI port on the low end model.

The addition of the HDMI port is definitely a plus in Sony's arsenal in the upcoming console war as it effectively removes the "The low-end PS3 Blu-Ray player won't play commercial 1080p movies due to digital content protection" argument. Here's a rundown on what Sony had to say on their plans for the Playstation 3;

  • The price of the Japanese low end Playstation 3 model will be dropped to 49,980 yen. (appx U.S. $429)
  • The low end Playstation 3 will now feature a HDMI port.
  • Kutaragi reinforced Sony's vision of a "open to all" online service.
  • Kutaragi confirmed that the Playstation 3 will be backward compatible with Playstation and Playstation 2 titles.
  • Apparently the Playstation 3 will also be able to play said older titles over a network connection.
  • The ability to play classic Sega Genesis and NEC TurboGrafx16 titles on the console was confirmed, though no titles were announced.

We'll keep following the announcements from TGS and update as we can - stay tuned!

MICROSOFT TO WARRANTY EARLY XBOX 360 UNITS, REFUND REPAIRS?

News is sketchy atm, but apparently Microsoft is making some type of extension to the warranties of the original runs of Xbox 360's. Word on the street is that they still consider your 360 (if purchased before 1/1/06) under warranty at the moment and will issue you a refund if you had to have it repaired since then at your expense via Microsoft's repair center.

Like I said, everything is still murky on this announcement, once something official comes out of MS as far as what exactly they're offering here, I'll post back.

HOW TO PLAY XBOX LIVE ARCADE GAMES VIA CD/DVD

360GameSaves.com has discovered that if you have a way to copy your Xbox Live Arcade game files to your PC HD (XSata for those with a HD, Memory card transfer kit for those without, etc) and then burn them to a specific directory on a CD/DVD, they will run off of that burned CD or DVD when placed in your Xbox 360 with your profile loaded.

Before anyone starts feeling awkward, the games will only work in trial mode unless you have bought the game, so don't think you're gonna go and take XBLA for a ride on the free train. Apparently the unlock code for each title is keyed to your profile. So there you have it, if you have a core system and only a memory card, or just don't want to use HD space for your XBLA collection, you can now play all your XBLA titles via CD or DVD instead of having to swap them around or use up the entire card with just a game or two and not have room for bonus content (that would fit) or saves.

"We've made a little discovery here that may prove useful to 360 users without an expensive harddrive for their console.

Xbox Live Arcade Titles will execute when placed onto CDR/DVDR disks.

XBLA on HDD reside in this format on Partition3 of HardDrive. /Content/0000000000000000/*TitleID*/000D0000/*XBLA Game*

Burning this directory structure to any writable disk and placed in a console will populate the XBLA Menu with the titles on the disk. Of course, they will still run in TRIAL mode unless said console has purchased this content. However, we felt this was still useful for people with Memory Units that can only hold one title at a time or even people without any storage options at all.

Demos, Videos, Profiles, and Saves were also tested in this fashion but were not recognized by the system unfortunately. USB Drives and Memory Sticks also tested and not working for either XBLA or the latter." - 360GameSaves.com

Head on over to 360GameSaves at this link for all the details and a link to their discussion thread on the subject.
