GAMEFLY DS-LITE GIVEAWAY PROMOTION
Gamefly is currently running a promotion where members can earn a free Nintendo DS-Lite by getting 5 people to sign up for the service. Here's how it works;
- Members can supply people with a special link to sign up for a free trial of the service (the link merely makes sure to credit the member with the referral)
- Should the people using the link sign up for the service stay past the free trial period, the member gets credit for a sign up.
- Once the member has gotten credit for 5 sign-ups, they've qualified for a free DS-Lite.
- Better yet, as soon as the people they referred become full members, they too can take advantage of the promotion and get their own free DS-Lite the same way.
- If you're already a Gamefly member, check your promotions or referrals tab to see information on how you can take advantage of the promotion.
Now then, since I'd love a free DS-Lite, let me start off by saying if you'd like to join the Gamefly service, why not use this link so that this humble little news establishment can get it's hands on a new shiny toy? Please?... we'll be your best friend!
That said, let me tell you a bit about the Gamefly service. If you follow the site, you know I mention them often, as they're my primary source of both renting and buying games - here's how it works.
- Just like the Netflix service, based on your subscription plan, you can have up to four games out at any time.
- 1 game at a time =$14.95 + tax per month
- 2= $21.95 + tax per month
- 3 =$28.95 + tax per month
- 4 = $35.95 + tax per month
- You can keep those games as long as you want (so long as you're still a member), but new games will not be sent back until you return a title or purchase one of the games.
- Generally, within a few days of release a title gets it's price marked down from it's full retail cost. This is one of the true benefits of the service. Here's what you do.
- Rent a game on the day it comes out so that you're the first person to ever get that copy of it.
- Try it when it arrives, if you don't like it, send it back and get your next game. If you do like it, check the "keep it" option
- The keep it option will usually activate a few days after a game releases, and the markdown is significant. For example, a $59.99 Xbox 360 game is usually $48 or so with a few days of release. So instead of buying that game for $59.99 + tax brand new, you can buy your "used" copy for $48 + tax (shipping is free for members) and they'll send you the box and instructions - remember, you're the first person to ever rent this game, so you basically got it brand new.
- As time goes on, the keep it price will usually continue to drop until Gamefly reaches a point where they now need all the copies they have left for rentals. At that time, the keep it option vanishes.
- In addition, the longer you're a member, the better your price will be. As an example, I've consecutively been a member for over a year (more like 2 now probably) so I get an addition 10 percent off their keep it prices and a $5 coupon towards purchases every 3 months. Not too shabby - that same Xbox 360 game that I would have bought for $59.99 in the store now only costs me $43.99 or so if I use the rent/keep option - less if I have one of those $5 coupons.
- Finally, you don't have to rent a game to buy it. You can also buy used games directly from Gamefly's inventory. The prices range from good to fantastic and the quality of the games and cases is usually excellent.
- Gamefly currently rents games for the GBA, DS, Xbox, Xbox 360, Playstation 2, PSP and Gamecube consoles. They will be renting Wii and Playstation 3 games as they become available - and yes, the same process I listed above should work for those games as well - it's how I managed to pick up a couple of Xbox 360 games at launch for a much lower price than the stores were selling them for.
So there you go. The bottom line here is that if you're someone who likes to try everything that comes out, buys a lot of games and doesn't want to spend a mountain of cash to do so, it could well be the service for you. Even if you don't want to buy a game, the ability to keep it as long as you want is always nice. Again, if this little sales pitch has sold you or you've been thinking about joining the service anyway, why not give yours truly the credit for the referral by signing up using this link.
