THE VIEWSONIC SAGA # 7: IF WE DO NOTHING, MAYBE HE'LL GO AWAY

So naturally I didn't hear back from Viewsonic on the monitor issue yet, so as instructed I called them this morning to get an update on what's going on... and the answer is... nothing.

That's right, whoever my case was forwarded to hasn't done anything with it yet. Nothing. Nada. Hell, they haven't even put a comment on the case stating that they've even looked at it yet. This is apparently Viewsonic's idea of customer service. I guess they weren't sorry about all the problems that I've had after all.

So now I've been told to call back on Monday, probably so I can be lied to again or told that they aren't going to do anything they mentioned in the previous conversation I had with them. Then they'll start the usual crap lines about how long it will take and shipping. While the quality of their monitors is suspect at best, and their customer service is the worst I've seen, they certainly do excel at wasting ones time.

So if you feel like being part of the infinite waste of time this whole thing has been, why not check out the previous articles about the whole situation at the following links; Start, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth - It shouldn't happen to a dog.

As for the site upgrades, they're still on hold for now but you can still use this link for the template front page skin if you find our usual style hard to read or just not visually appealing enough.

EPYX RISING FROM THE ASHES

Back in the late 80's I was a huge fan of Epyx on the Commodore 64/128. You always knew you were going to get something cool with an Epyx game, and I can't count the number of hours I wasted with "The Games" series - most especially California Games.

Well gang, those days could be coming back. Gamespot is reporting that System 3 is bringing back the Epyx brand name and will be releasing some of their classic games on the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. Woot!

From what I've heard, System 3 plans on starting off with re-makes of California Games and Impossible Mission along with their own C64 hit, The Last Ninja. The games will not however just be emulated versions of the originals. System 3 plans on remaking each game, but leaving them in 2d. Whether that will amount to just a graphic facelift for the titles or something more extreme remains to be seen.

"You gotta keep the gameplay mechanics the same or else it ceases to be the original game and you're only using the game brand to sell games," Kale said. "It ceases to be Impossible Mission or California Games or what have you. ... What we're doing is we're incorporating the original gameplay and mechanics and bringing the gameplay up to date."" - Mark Kale, founder, System 3

Check out the Gamespot article here for more information and hope that unlike the Atari 7800 version of Impossible Mission, the re-make isn't actually impossible to finish. So stay awhile... stay forever!

CHROMEHOUNDS CONTENT NOW AVAILABLE AT HIGH PRICE

Here's the deal... Sega has released 10 new items for their Xbox 360 game Chromehounds via the Xbox Live Marketplace... at a cost of 100 points ($1.25) per item. See? and we thought "horse armor" was bad...

The problem here is that Chromehounds is an online game, and if these items make any kind of a difference in the competitive balance of the game, we've just entered a whole new realm of "broken" in gaming. When the industry allows greed to grow to a point where the way to win games is buy buying what you need and not by skill, we've lost something.

Rather than ramble on and on like I usually do, I'm going to just re-post something I put up in the comments section of Major Nelson's blog on the subject. Supposedly Microsoft was taking a close look at what people thought about the situation, and I figured that I wanted to throw my 25 cents into the machine for good measure. The fact that somehow the Major's blog removed all my paragraph formatting and turned my post into one big blur is another story.

Of course, I'm rambling again - so I'll stop now and get with quoting the post. Enjoy.

"I too feel like the Marketplace is coming to a crossroads. We're seeing more and more of these transactions as time goes on, and I'm beginning to fear that this is only the beginning. You have to begin to wonder how much content will be withheld from titles in the future on the basis that the money can be made up on the back-end. How long before a game is incomplete without spending the additional money?

When the idea of the marketplace was first announced, Microsoft used Forza as an example. At the time I thought it was a HORRIBLE idea as buying new parts for your car would potentially change the game from being about skill to being about who is willing to spend more money.

I don't play Chromehounds, so I don't know if these add-ons can be used in the online portion of the game, but if they can, then something is definitely wrong here.
People can say "If you don't want it, don't buy it" all they want, but when those purchases still can affect a player whether they've opted into an additional purchase or not, the idea of downloadable content becomes a negative in my book, not a positive.

As an example, let's take PGR3. If a car was made available in a "pay" pack that was head and shoulders better than any other car in the game, what would that do to competitive balance? Would you want to race when you knew no matter how well you raced someone who spent an additional $5 on a car could always beat you easily? - That's what I'm worried we're on the cusp of - the consumables concept just pushes that even further. How long until we start having to pay for things that are currently free?

Add to that the fact that with downloadable content we're entering into an age where games are hitting the market with bugs (see MLB2K6 and Madden NFL '07 (yes the one that's not out yet - if you aren't aware, it's going to be patched at launch or right thereafter due to issues with player fatigue) that SHOULD have been caught in the testing process, but for whatever reason aren't.

When I talk to people who prefer console games over PC games one of the main reasons I'm given for that choice is that the console game market doesn't have the bugs, need for patches or costs of constantly upgrading that the PC game market carries with it. Looks like that's changing too.

Getting back on track, I'll sum up my thoughts on this one as such;

The idea of paying an additional $12.50 for 10 simple items in a game is extremely disappointing to me as a console gamer and Microsoft customer. I'm sure Sega is trying to recoup some costs on Chromehounds as it isn't the red-hot seller they felt it would be, but this is the absolute wrong way to go about it - the price point is just too high - and it could set a bad trend within the marketplace."
- G.P. "NYLatenite" Fornasiero

We'll talk about Microsoft's plans for "consumables" soon, but I'd like to know what your thoughts are regarding the direction downloadable content is taking? Give a post in the comments section and sound off!

XBOX 360 MADDEN NFL '07 ALREADY NEEDS PATCH

Yup, this has got to be a record for console games. Due to problems found in early review copies of Madden NFL'07 for the Xbox 360, 1up.com has confirmed that Electronic Arts will be making a patch available around launch that should correct a few key concerns about the highly anticipated title. So just what are the problems being reported and what does EA have to say about them?

"Issue #1, reported by the users of Operation Sports (registration required) claimed that Hall of Fame players started appearing on the rosters of other teams. While hardcore Madden fans don't seem to like this, that's how their inclusions is actually supposed to work. "It's working the way we intended it to," said Mr. Ortiz. "Whatever players you unlock, they are the players that will actually be available when you start the franchise mode. If you've already unlocked 10 Hall of Famers, they'll be available for players to sign... It's there for users to take advantage of." Mr. Ortiz recognized that this troubled some players, and mentioned that there is a in-game fix available, where players can save off the roster when they're booting up, and then proceeding to load it once they're in-game -- effectively eliminating the old-timers from the rosters.

Issue#2, reported by Madden Nation, was that players weren't fatiguing at all. The initial posting stated they "broke like 3 tackles and laid on the turbo... he's not even in the yellow." (Players fatigue from green to yellow to red.) We asked Mr. Ortiz about this as well. "That's actually not the case. The UI isn't registering it... You fatigue at a lower pace than in the past, but it isn't reflected in the UI. [It's] Something we're addressing and fixing right now." He explained that this fix would be delivered in the way of a patch to the game for 360 users, but didn't have a specific date as to when it would be available. "Very soon. Around the release date," he said, adding "We don't just shove the fix out there. We don't want to slide [the balance] it too far in one direction." - 1up.com

This is a prime example of the biggest fear I have about console that can allow their games to be patched - namely that the industry runs the risk of seeing developers cut corners on testing in order to make release dates (as they do with PC titles) under the opinion that they can just "patch it later".

Even worse, I'm sure there are many Xbox 360 owners out there who don't use Xbox Live that will be picking this title up. Those interested in finding out more about this can check out the 1up.com article at this link. Nice going EA.

GAMESTOP NOT TAKING PREORDERS FOR PS3 OR WII YET

Firing Squad is reporting that Gamestop (and by default, EB Games) will not be taking preorders for the Nintendo Wii or Sony Playstation 3 until they know exactly how many units of each they will be receiving.

While Gamestop is currently expecting to receive some 750,000 Wii's and 1 million Playstation 3's at launch, they want to make sure that there's no repeat of the Xbox 360 launch fiasco where inventory amounts were slashed just before launch and people (like myself) who had put money down on a system months ago were left out in the cold.

For more infortmation check out the full text of the Firing Squad article here.

F.E.A.R. CONFIRMED FOR PLAYSTATION 3

Sierra Entertainment has officially announced that F.E.A.R. will be coming to the Playstation 3 this November;

"Sierra Entertainment today announced that the award-winning F.E.A.R.™ (First Encounter Assault Recon), is currently in development for the PlayStation®3 gaming and entertainment system and is scheduled to launch during November 2006.

Already a critical and commercial smash on the PC, F.E.A.R. will bring a new level of FPS game play to PlayStation 3 with exclusive single player content designed to immerse the player deeper in the world of the F.E.A.R. team, as well as the visceral action of F.EA.R. multiplayer

Definitely some good news for Sony here. While they don't have it exclusively, at least Microsoft can't claim it as an exclusive either. You can read the full text of the press release at this link.

MICROSOFT REITERATES STANCE ON HD-DVD DRIVE

In response to the recent spate of rumors regarding Microsoft deciding that they will use the upcoming Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive as a game storage format, John Porcaro, Group Manager of Microsoft's Online Marketing department, posted the following denial of any such plan over at Gamerscore Blog and reiterated the company's stance that the drive will only be used for movie playback;

"I'm seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD DVD games.  The answer is no.

Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, we’ve been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies.  It will not play games on HD DVD." -John Porcaro, Group Manager, Microsoft Online Marketing Communications

Click here to head over to Gamerscore Blog and check out the full text of the statement. I'm inclined to believe this one, just because I'm sure Microsoft realizes the absolute worst thing you can do when selling a console is split your user base.

MORE XBOX LIVE ARCADE TITLES OFFICIALLY PRICED & DATED

Microsoft has officially confirmed the next batch of Xbox Live Arcade titles. Over the next 3 weeks we'll be seeing Texas Hold 'Em, Time Pilot and Scramble coming to the Live Arcade.

One major thing should be noted here - Microsoft will be giving Texas Hold 'Em away for free for the first 48 hours that it's available - after that the game will cost 800 points. My guess is this is either the reason for the earlier confusion regarding the pricing of Texas Hold 'Em or a way for Microsoft to save some face following that confusion.

Without further delay, here are the dates and prices;

  • August 23rd - Texas Hold 'Em - Free for first 48 hours, 800 points ($10) thereafter
  • August 30th - Time Pilot - 400 points ($5)
  • September 6th - Scramble - 400 points ($5)

The original "unconfirmed" statement regarding those titles was a week off and included Lumines Live! as the final release in this batch. Currently there is no word on when Lumines Live can be expected to be made available, but the consensus is that whenever that does happen, the game will carry a 1,200 point ($15) price tag.
